Women face the most hardship from different types of mistreatment and lack of power. They are also powerful agents for creating change. Since 2014, we have worked together with local indigenous Mayan women to establish Women's Circles. These are community groups where women support each other, especially those who are going through tough times. In the safe and fair Circle environment, women discover the value of helping one another in a situation where they are often alone and unnoticed by others. They form support systems, talk about challenges and solutions, boost their confidence and ability to act. They become better at spotting and handling violence against women and improve their relationships with family and partners. They learn practical skills for their work, feel happier, and rebuild their connections with themselves, others, their heritage, and nature.
